Kenshiro Abbe Sensei  &  Kyu Shin Do Judo

Kenshiro Abbe had no association what-so-ever with KyuShinDo Karate - Aikido - JuJitsu.
KyuShinDo is a theory /philosophy of Judo movement created by Kenshiro Abbe Sensei - KyuShinDo is ``not`` a martial art - Sooo how do people claim to be graded in KyuShinDo ???- How can you have a dan grade in a theory ???

British Aikido History
1955 - 2012

The official British Aikido History site - Is dedicated to the true history of Aikido in the UK from its inception in 1955 by the legendary Budo Master Kenshiro Abbe Sensei.

Right: Kenshiro Abbe Sensei with Ken Williams Sensei at the Hut Dojo.

Right: Mitsusuke Harada Sensei

Right: Henry Ellis - Mitsusuke Harada - Derek Eastman join Harada Sensei at the TK Chiba Celebration in 2006. Harada Sensei was invited to the UK in 1963 by Kenshiro Abbe Sensei - He held his first classes at the Hut Dojo. Harada had no students to begin with - Henry Ellis and Derek Eastman studied Karate with Harada, he in turn studied Aikido with them - Harada began to incorporate Aikido moves later into his Shotokai Karate as can be seen in his teachings today.

The site is maintained by AikiKai Shihans Henry Ellis and Derek Eastman -  The last two surviving pioneers from that exciting era of the birth of Aikido in the UK at the famous "Hut Dojo"

Ellis & Eastman Sensei's are co-authors of the book `Positive Aikido` - they are proud to have their diplomas signed by legends - Osensei Morihei Ueshiba - Kenshiro Abbe - Masahilo Nakazono - Masamichi Noro - TK Chiba - Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba.

British Aikido Board - Jack Poole Controversy Slide Show

The Betrayal of British Budo

The British Aikido Board Controversy Slide Show.

Documented evidence of the conduct of the UK Governing Body for Aikido.

Detailing the BAB's attempted collusion with one Mr Jack Poole to change forever the true proud history and lineage of British Aikido, from its inception to the UK in 1955 by Kenshiro Abbe Sensei.

Henry Ellis was actually Mr Poole's first teacher as one can clearly see from the large collection of photos and statements, this did not deter the BAB from proudly parading Mr Poole along-side his teacher as a `Pioneer of British Aikido` .

Imagine you are a direct student of Kenshiro Abbe Sensei and recognised by the Doshu and TK Chiba as a true pioneer of British Aikido - The UK Aikido governing body invite you to receive an award in recognition of this - As you wait to meet the Lord Mayor of Birmingham - you hear a shuffling sound - you look behind - standing there unannounced is one of your old students in line to receive the same award as a pioneer - unbelievable. You could not make this up - The BAB did.

Due to the increasing amount of BS from the MayoShinDo group and many others who make claims to have been associated with Kenshiro Abbe Sensei and KyuShinDo, which is an insult to Sensei's memory.

Kyu Shin Do
by Kenshiro Abbe Sensei - 1915 - 1985

Kyu: To Study, or Seek

Shin: The Cosmic Nucleul Principal ( precise translation impossible ) . All motion in the universe maybe resolved basically, to a series of circular and semi-circular actions. This only by obeying this fundamental principal of motion: avoiding stiff, angular stances, or postures, that we can achieve the best Judo - Aikido - Kendo - Karate.
The three precepts of KyuShinDo  are as follows:

BANBUTSU RUTEN: All things existent in the universe are in a constant state of flux.

RITSU DO: This motion is rhythmic and flowing.

CHOWA: All things work and flow in perfect harmony and accord.
The human body naturally falls into this ordered state, when we perform physical techniques.
We study not only the movement alone, but seek the most basic principals behind the action.
One cannot make perfect separation of the spiritual and physical without death resulting through the basic idea of physical application, the spiritual import of the theory should follow naturally.
Please regard this very brief explanation, as you would the caption of an illustration, both requiring direct experience for complete understanding.
DO: Way, or Path.

This website is dedicated to my teacher Kenshiro Abbe Sensei - the founder of KyuShinDo . It is unfortunate that I ( we) have to also expose the ever increasing amount of BS by people who are seeking some form of credibility by using the name of this great Budoka.

                G Mayo 10th dan - founder - KyuShinDo or BullShinDo ?

It is sad to see that, despite the facts, the MayoShinDo group still claim on their website Mayo site - Mr Mayo is the ``Founder of KyuShinDo``.

Whilst such crass idiotic claims do little for the memory of Mr Mayo or the integrity of the Mayo group, it is an insult to the memory of our teacher Kenshiro Abbe Sensei 8th dan, a man who was a true budo legend.

The Mayo group make much of a letter acknowledging a one off meeting with Abbe Sensei by Mr Mayo - Mrs Teresa Reeve the widow of Bill Reeve Sensei ( personal aide to Abbe Sensei )states that she clearly recalls that her husband reluctantly typed the letter after advising Abbe Sensei against sending a personal letter to such a man as Mr Mayo. It would appear that Bill Reeve Sensei was a very perceptive man.

Theory-Philosophy of KyuShinDo Judo - NOT - Karate - Aikido or anything else.

Kyushindo was the life's work of my teacher the legendary Budo Master Kenshiro Abbe Sensei. Kyushindo can be equated with centripetal force - It is rather sad to see so many who simply have no concept of  the philosophy and application of Kyushindo, who, in their ignorance have high-jacked the name in many cases because it sounds very `Japanesy` - As a direct student of Abbe Sensei I advise that Sensei ``NEVER`` used the name Kyushindo in association with any other martial art than his beloved Judo - It was a theory/philosophy that made him the 5th dan champion of all Japan - he was one of only four people to beat the great Judoka Masahiko Kimura.
There are of course the shameless charlatans who believe that by using the name of Kyushindo will mislead others in to believing they are in some way linked by lineage to this great teacher.
KyuShinDo is a Theory / Philosophy of the application of Judo's circular movement developed by Kenshiro Abbe Sensei - We now see people with dan grades in KyuShinDo - HOW CAN YOU HAVE A DAN GRADE IN A THEORY ??

Kenshiro Abbe Sensei only ever applied his theory of KyuShinDo to Judo ~ He never taught KyuShinDo Karate or Kyushindo Aikido.

It is worth noting that M Harada Sensei Shotokai Karate was invited to the UK in 1963 by Kenshiro Abbe Sensei - Harada Sensei began teaching at the Hut Dojo where I personally studied with him for some time - At no time during his years with Abbe Sensei, or after, has Harada Sensei ever referred to Kyushindo in Karate.

Kenshiro Abbe Sensei 8th dan Judo ~ 6th dan Karate ~ 6th dan Aikido ~ 6th dan Kendo ~ 6th dan KyuDo...The old " Abbe School of Budo " or as it has always been affectionately known as " The Hut Dojo" . This board has hung in the dojo from its humble beginnings, the early dan grades for both Judo and Aikido are named on the board...At the bottom of the board you can see "KyuShinDo". Although this was the " Abbe School of Budo " .Teaching Judo - Aikido - Kendo - Karate.~~ Judo was the only art to involve the theory of KyuShinDo. There are now so many claims to have been a student of Abbe Sensei or to have trained at the Hut Dojo, I often wondered who cleaned the dojo windows.

The Golden age of British Budo 1955 ~ 1964

The early sensei's ~ K Abbe ~ M Otani ~ M Nakazono ~ H Michigami ~ T Abe ~ M Noro ~M Harada ~ Shohei Hamano ~ TK Chiba ~ To name a few.
On this site you will find links to a wide selection of Budo articles. Factual stories of the early days of British Budo. This period was often referred to as the ` Golden Age of British Budo ` by Masahilo Nakazono Sensei. Believe me, there was such a time. The 1950s & early 60s ~ It was a time before the invention of Plastic and the clutter of soon to follow ``Plastic Samurai``. It was a time before the internet and the abilty to create your own worthless dan grade certificates. At this time there were other organisations that also had the same very high standards.

No Dishonour.
A time when no one would dishonour or dare to grade themselves. This was a time when students earned their grades, at the same time they were proud of their hard earned achievements. It was a time when students trained hard, the thought of Budo as a quasi religeon was the last thing on their minds.
It was a time that all the Martial Arts shared a healthy mutual respect for each other.
It was also a time before a teacher from another dojo would ~UP ~ your dan grade if you joined their group or association, known as the " Kellogs Syndrome ".

Not a good time for Dancing.
This was a time when there was only `Traditional Aikido` a time when tradition was an integral part of the martial arts. This was a time when only a dan grade wore a Hakama, which was received on his/her graduation to dan grade, a time of values and respect for tradition.

It was a time before Aikido uke's learned to float & fly, a time before `` no touch throws `` and Aikido with coloured ribbons or music, or both. A time before Ki stood for Ki-dology ,a time before Ki was thought of as a form of magic. It was a much better time for Aikido, and Budo in general. It was a time when the best place for dancing was at the London Hammersmith Palais.

When Kids were Kids..
It was a time when kids were allowed to be kids, a time before the idiots graded six year old kids to dan grade, it was a time when kids had a `mon` grading system of stripes and colours,a system which allowed them the time develop,to progress slowly and enjoy themselves. It was a time before the ``odd`` people wore designer gi's and Hakamas. It was a time before those blue Judo gi's and those awful badges.

A Time Before " Friends United "
It was a time before Kenshiro Abbe Sensei had so many friends, Abbe Sensei would have been number one on Face Book. It was a time before Abbe Sensei went from house to house eating `` everyones mums pie & mash ``. It was a time before the wannabee plastic samurai who never knew him, took Abbe Sensei's name in vain and added it to their shame.

When Dan Grades were special.
There was such a time in British Budo,it was a much better time.
It was a time when a 1st dan was special, a 3rd dan was like a super hero.
It was a time when only respected Budo teachers held 6th ~ 7th or 8th dan, Jeeez just look around you now ?? :-( . When I see some of these modern self graded 6 - 7 -8th dans - 10th dans, I just can't help but think ``my god !!, they actually compare themselves with the likes of Sensei's Abbe ~ Otani ~ Nakazono ~ Michigami Kellogs have much to be responsible for...Mr George Mayo attended ``ONE`` class with Abbe Sensei, he requested the usual opportunistic photo, his ``devoted `` followers claim Mr Mayo to be 10th dan KyuShinDo. ( Reminder, I must add a bullshit icon ! )

Plastic Plonkers
It was a time before the Plastic Plonker Samurai who had no concept or understanding of the true philosophy of KyuShinDo, yet, thought the name KyuShinDo sounded really ``Japanesy `` then added it to anything and everything.
There are some that say " There was no such Golden Age of British Budo " How would they know? It was before most of them were born. As a prominent Japanese Shihan said to me " Henry, there are very few martial arts clubs, there are many social clubs ".

Make a dream come true.
It was also a time before Mr Mayo dreamt he was the founder of KyuShinDo and woke up a 10th dan. It was a time before Abbe Sensei developed KyuShin and with the wonderful insight of Mr Mayo added " Do " or was it " Duh !? "

Mr Mayo `10th dan` KyuShin Duh
The students of Kenshiro Abbe Sensei studied with the master for many years, I know it was a dissapointment to Sensei that no student fully grasped the true meaning of his theory / philosopy of KyuShinDo. I have never met one `genuine` student who has claimed to completely understand, even after many years of study. Yet, Mr Mayo 10th dan did, after only one lesson, has spawned a large group of clubs teaching " KyuShinDuh ". Was this the start of the Plastic Samurai era ?. Just a thought, why is it when people grade themselves, they grade 8th and 10th dan, why is it never 9th ???
Just curious?

Mr Jack ( Man of Budo ) Poole.

Just as the followers of the late Mr Mayo have promoted him to 10th dan and laid claim to a non existant lineage to Kenshiro Abbe Sensei, along with the name of KyuShinDuh, in association with everything they do.

This is a classic example of what the followers of Mr Jack Poole will do. Despite the proven facts showing his claimed history/ lineage to be a total sham. These people will continue to promote this nonsense long after Mr Poole and I are gone..These people will use and abuse all the names of the deceased Budo masters as our infamous man of Budo has done for so many years, perhaps there will be no one around then to tell the truth, and that sham goes on and on.

I, G.S. Mayo - Founder of KyuShinDo

.. Big Chief Mayo im speakum heap big porkies with forked tongue.

Quote:"I, G.S. Mayo, am the founder and developer of the art of Kyushindo and this letter is addressed both to the students who have left me in the past". ...Unquote:
Quote: ""Round Hairy Objects !"" Henry Ellis. Unquote:

It is a sad reflection on the martial arts of today that students of MayoShinDo believe this bs. Not only do the believe it, they promote it, they grade in it, they have no respect for true lineage.

To set the record straight, please read the letters on this page from Robin Otani Sensei President of the British Judo Council. Also the very important letter from Mrs Teresa Reeve Sensei, widow of Bill Reeve Sensei who was Abbe Sensei's aide from 1955. For anyone who is under the illusion that Kenshiro Abbe Sensei was ever associated with Mr Mayo other than a one off meeting involving opportunistic photos, or that Abbe Sensei ever taught such a thing as KyuShinDo Karate to anyone, and that includes the man who liked to be known as ``Chief`` Mr Mayo?. certainly never happened !!.
Abbe Sensei never referred to KyuShinDo in any other subject than Judo. He demonstrated Karate at his Budo displays, he would teach kicking and punching as a part of his Aikido teaching / instruction. In the early 1960s Abbe Sensei brought Mitsukie Harada Sensei to Britain to teach Karate at the now famous Hut Dojo. I was there when Harada Sensei arrived, I studied with both Abbe Sensei & Harada Sensei, there was never a student named G Mayo to be seen anywhere but in his own dreams.

Dan grades in KyuShinDo ?. How on earth can you have a dan grade in a theory / philosophy ? Gerard Gyngel Sensei BJC Judo Champion ( 3 times ).

Our Sincere Apology
We apologise if we have failed to add your name to the list of great personal friends of Kenshiro Abbe Sensei? ~ Please forgive our ingratitude if your teacher sat for many hours discussing philosophy with Abbe Sensei whilst he slept ~ Or, if we have not mentioned how much Abbe Sensei enjoyed your mothers pie and mash dinners, we sincerely apologise, there are just too many of you to mention on this site. If Abbe Sensei stayed at yours, or your teachers home for several weeks eating dear old mums famous pie and mash and teaching you privately whilst neglecting the BJC and its 35,000 international members, I can only apologise again. If Abbe Sensei graded you or your teacher to dan grade and Sensei's secretary forgot to send you a certificate. We apologise for that too. If your teacher had a dream that Abbe Sensei developed Kyu-Shin and your Chief added ``Do `` we can only apologise for that too, It is so strange that Abbe Sensei was a master of ` Judo ` ` Kendo ` ` Aikido ` ` Kendo ` KyuDo ` KarateDo ` yet this great Budoka forgot to add Do to KyuShin - Do...have you heard of `` MayoLudo ``

Maybe I should develop " CageOShinDo " . I could say that while Abbe Sensei was eating my mothers special pie & mash, Abbe Sensei dropped the rights to the name CageShinDo into my cot. I could grade myself to 10th dan which would be much more that my father has achieved in over 50 years...
